Appreciations to John O’Connell high school’s Move Up summer program for inviting us to present today. We had great conversations today with the incoming freshman class during our “Art, Culture & Resistance” workshop. Preserve the culture by any means necessary! ✊🏾🎨🙌🏾

5 Elements Youth Network at the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Ceremony at Alcatraz Island on October 10th, 2016.

Students from our founding cohort attended the annual sunrise ceremony that reclaims Columbus Day in honor of the continued survival and resistance by indigenous communities of all tribes. Participants were exposed to the history of resilience in the U.S., observe and participate in an intimate ceremony. 

For many of our students it was their first time on the island, and a great way to experience both Alcatraz and a sunrise in the spirit of unity, culture and community empowerment.

Balboa High School’s PULSE (Public Leadership and Service) Pathway on an “Arts, Culture & Resistance Mural tour” and field trip with 5 Elements.

Juniors got a chance to learn about the rich history of SF art and muralism, with messages and images of resistance to local and global displacement.
